Edinburgh, Scotland

One of the most anticipated and exciting part about about our visit to Great Britain was our trip to Edinburgh, Scotland. I have traveled to England a handful of times but never to Scotland. Even though we only had two days, we packed in so much and explored a great deal of the city. I had no idea how much I would love this city! I have always been a Londoner at heart, but Edinburgh is now competing with it. They are different cities in size and scale but both rich in history and culture. On this blog, we highlighted several sights to see, places to eat and drink, and of course all the shopping you can handle. I also have noted a few things that we didn't have time to see, which are still on our list... which gives us the chance to "Haste ye back to Scotland."

The hosts of our adorable Air bnb, ( located in "New Town") recommended that we start our sightseeing at Carlton Hill. A relatively short distance from the area we were staying in. It's a place you can see most of Edinburgh and get your bearings straight. It was of course a little rainy as we were walking ,which is to be expected when traveling to the UK but seeing the view of the city was a great way to start our trip. The National monument is a signature of Edinburgh and also a UNESCO world heritage site, as it very much resembles the famous Parthenon. Comfortable shoes are recommended because there is quite an incline when hiking up the hill.

Graffiti art along the wall hiking up to Calton Hill... Is that you Banksy? Just one of the few local artworks on display when walking the "hill." Let me remind you about the weather in Scotland. It's (almost) totally true what everyone says.. its always raining. This was a rainy and cold summer day in June, perfect for us...Southerners from the United States. The weather did not deter us from getting great pictures and experiencing the Scottish lifestyle. Just always be prepared with a jacket and umbrella in hand.

Our last day was a very long and adventurous one-sightseeing through the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle, but we decided to end our trip doing a little hike up Arthur's Seat. We had 48 hours in Edinburgh, and we were determined to see everything we could. A word for the wise, if you plan on touring Edinburgh castle, go early in the morning as the que to get in- is fairly lengthy, especially during the summer months. You can start your day at the castle, then shop along the Royal Mile, have lunch, and make your way to the Queen Elizabeth's Scotland Residence, Hollyrood Palace. After this, Arthur's walk is a short, but very steep hike up. It will take you anywhere from 30min- 1 hour, depending on the route you take. We took the shortest route since our day was coming to an end. The views from the top of Arthur's Seat are pretty unbelievable. You can see the entire city of Edinburgh, and the coastline. A sight to most definitely see and will make your trip an unforgettable one.
